What Is PRP + Microneedling Treatment?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) plus microneedling combines two powerful treatment modalities in one to achieve skin rejuvenation.

During the procedure, the Eclipse MicroPen Elite device is used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin with tiny needles in order to produce collagen and elastin. Micro-needling also creates channels through which Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) or stem growth factors can be applied to the skin surface to expedite the body’s own repair process. Combining PRP with the automated micro-needling, you get a significant increase in collagen since growth factors are able to travel through the microchannels directly to rejuvenating tissue.

PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma therapy uses growth factors found in the patient’s own platelets. It is a natural serum derived directly from your own cells to initiate repair and feminine rejuvenation. The patient’s blood is drawn and placed in a machine, where the platelet-rich plasma is separated from the blood and applied immediately after microneedling.

Additional FAQs About PRP + Microneedling

How Is the Procedure Done?

A sterile needle-tip containing 12 tiny micro-needles is attached to the Eclipse MicroPen™. Your skin care professional will apply a thin layer of topical gel to your skin and select the appropriate treatment depth based on your unique needs. Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered.

What Does It Feel Like?

The feeling associated with the Eclipse MicroPen™ is similar to sandpaper being moved across the skin. While some areas are more sensitive than others, the speed of the reciprocating needle tip makes the treatment comfortable.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

The procedure takes 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area treated.

What Is the Downtime?

Immediately after the treatment, you will notice a bright redness to the skin. The total healing time depends on the depth of needles used and the number of overlapping passes your skincare professional performs. On average, patients are red for 2-4 days. Some patients heal completely in 24 hours. It is recommended that you use our EltaMD Aftercare package* to speed up the healing process.

  • Day 1-2 (normally 24 hours) – Erythema & mild swelling subsides.
  • Day 2-7 – Increased exfoliation & dryness
  • 1 week onwards – Improvement in texture & tone
  • 3 weeks onwards – Improvement in pigmentation
  • 6 weeks onwards – Improvement in wrinkles/lines, scars
When Will I See the Results?

Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several weeks. Results continue to improve up to 6 months after the treatment as collagen production continues.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Some patients only require a single treatment, once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 3 treatments spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks, or acne scars it is recommended to receive 5-8 sessions at 4-6 week intervals.

How Should I Be Prepared for Treatment?

2 Weeks Prior to Treatment

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure or tanning beds. You should do this regardless!
  • Inform the physician about any history of cold sores. If frequent outbreaks occur, a prescription for antiviral medication (valacyclovir) may be given prior to or the day of the procedure.
  • Treatments of superficial fillers should be done 2 weeks prior to or 2 weeks after microneedling.
  • Chemical peels should be completed 3 weeks prior to or 3 weeks after microneedling treatment.

1-2 Days Prior to Treatment
If you are prone to cold sores/herpes breakouts, start prescription for antiviral medication (valacyclovir) one day prior to the procedure or as directed.

One Hour Prior to Treatment
