Chemical Peels
What Is a Chemical Peel?
A Chemical peel is a technique used to remove layers of the skin to reveal a more radiant appearance of the skin. There are many types of chemical agents which treat numerous skin concerns such as acne, scarring, photodamage, pigmentation, fine lines, and wrinkles. Peels can range from a light “lunch time” peel with no down time to procedures that penetrate deep into the dermis with significant, but temporary, inflammation and peeling.
Chemical Peels (TCA & Jessner’s)
Our office provides glycolic acid, salicylic acid, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and Jessner’s solution peels. These are used to treat pigmentation of the skin in the form of photodamage (sun spots, “age spots”, “liver spots”), blotchiness, mild to moderate wrinkles & fine lines, skin that is dull in texture and color, and mild acne scarring. Patients with actinic keratoses or precancers may also benefit from these peels, though it is our practice to treat actinic keratoses with other therapies.
What is Salicylic Acid?
Salicylic acid, a light peel, is a keratolytic compound derived from willow tree bark, when it is applied to the skin it causes the dead skin cells to slough off easily and helps clear pores of any dirt, bacteria, and cellular debris. This peel may be performed periodically for general skin maintenance or mild rejuvenation for normal, aging or sun-damaged skin. It is known to help regulate the production of oil, which is a common cause of acne. Sal is also an anti-inflammatory and it soothes the skin of irritation caused by breakouts. For best results we recommend a series of peels with a minimum of four weeks in between treatments.
What is TCA and Jessner’s
TCA, or trichloroactic acid, is a relative of vinegar. It is one of the strongest medium depth peels; it penetrates deep into the skin to target more severe signs of aging and hyperpigmentation. Jessner’s is a more mild peel, a combination of lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol; it can be used to improve tone and texture of the skin. It can also reduce the appearance of large pores, acne scarring, and improve the appearance of fine lines. When TCA and Jessner’s are applied to the skin, it causes the top layer of the skin to tighten and dry up, then peeling over a period of several days to two weeks. After peeling it exposes a new layer of smoother, even, undamaged skin. TCA & Jessner’s peels are not lunchtime procedures. In order to treat discoloration, wrinkles, and textural changes of the skin, it is necessary to use an agent of sufficient strength and achieve a peel of adequate depth. TCA and Jessner’s can be used in conjunction to help achieve optimal results.
