Swimming and Your Skin

As the weather heats up, thoughts turn to staying cool this summer. Is there anything more refreshing on a hot summer day than a dip in the cool blue waters of a swimming pool? It feels wonderful to get into the water, but your skin may not be as happy about your choice to hit the pool. Frequent swimming can lead to dry, irritated skin if you are not careful, and neglecting to take the proper precautions can result in skin cancer with regular exposure to the summer sun. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to kick your skincare up a notch in summer, especially on pool days, to keep your skin fresh and healthy.

Start with Protection

Using sunscreen should be part of your daily routine, all year long. In the summer, you should always apply a sunscreen with 30 SPF or higher at least 15 minutes before swimming. Choose water-resistant sunscreen, and reapply at least every two hours. Some thicker sunscreens can even protect your skin against chemical damage from chlorine. Beyond sunscreen, use common sense measures to protect your skin from the sun. Wear a wide brimmed hat and protective clothing, stay out of the sun when it is at its peak, and sit in the shade when possible.

Keep Your Summer Skin Clean

As soon as you get out of the pool, rinse with fresh water. Use a gentle cleanser to remove sunscreen and chlorine from your skin, but steer clear of soaps and cleansers that strip your skin of its protective layers, because these can cause you to sunburn more easily. Pool chemicals can disrupt your skin’s natural pH, so look for a pH-balanced cleanser to help maintain your skin.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Once you have removed chemical residue from your skin, moisturize it to repair the natural barrier and rehydrate the skin. You should be moisturizing daily, even when you are not swimming, but it is particularly important when your skin has faced the damaging impact of chlorinated water. Additionally, well-hydrated skin helps protect against chemicals, so keeping your skin moisturized can help you put your best face forward at the pool.

Prioritize Hydration

Don’t just focus on moisturizing the outside of your skin, but nourish it from within by eating a nutritious diet and drinking plenty of water. Fortunately, it is easy to stay hydrated in summer, when you are naturally thirsty and there is so much fresh fruit to enjoy. Remember, even though you are surrounded by water, you will lose hydration while swimming because of the heat and your activity. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water poolside.

Dry with a Towel, Not the Sun

It can feel wonderful to hop out of the pool and lie on the towel, allowing the warm sun to dry your body. Unfortunately, this is not good for your skin. When you let your skin airdry, it can actually dry out the skin itself. It is a better idea to rinse with fresh water as soon as you get out of the pool, then dry with a cotton towel before reapplying SPF and getting back out into the sun.
