Kybella FAQs

Do you feel self-conscious about the fullness under your chin? A minimally invasive procedure called Kybella may help you regain your confidence. Find the answers to these most frequently asked questions to help you decide if Kybella is right for you.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that improves the appearance of a double chin (submental fullness). This medicine is available by prescription only and is applied by a licensed dermatologist.

How does Kybella work?

The active ingredient in Kybella is called synthetic deoxycholic acid. The natural form of this molecule occurs naturally in the body, aiding in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected beneath the chin, deoxycholic acid attacks the excessive fat cells there. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, decreasing submental fullness in the process. Note that Kybella is only approved for use in the submental area.

How many treatments are needed?

Your doctor will recommend a treatment plan based on your chin profile. Expect to receive multiple small injections under your chin at each appointment, which are spaced at least one month apart. Many patients start seeing results after two to four treatments, with up to six treatments possible.

How long do the results last?

Because deoxycholic acid destroys fat cells and prevents them from storing or accumulating more fat, Kybella treatments are considered extremely long-lasting. Once you achieve your desired aesthetic, you should not require further follow-up sessions.

What are the possible side effects?

As with all cosmetic injectables, side effects are possible. The most common are mild and may include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Redness
  • Hard areas of skin

More serious side effects are also possible. Call your doctor if you experience any of the following after receiving Kybella treatment:

  • Open sores (ulcers)
  • Drainage from the treatment site
  • Tissue cell-death (necrosis)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Nerve injury that causes an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness
Am I a candidate for Kybella?

Kybella is approved for patients who are 18 years of age or older and want to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat below the chin. Kybella may not be appropriate for candidates who have:

  • Excessive skin laxity
  • Prominent platysmal bands
  • A current or prior history of dysphagia
  • An infection at the injection site
  • Blood coagulation abnormalities
  • Prior aesthetic or surgical procedures in the submental area
Did Kybella go through clinical trials?

Yes. Kybella has been involved in over 20 clinical studies where more than 1,600 people were treated. In the trials, 79 percent of participants expressed satisfaction with the results 12 weeks after their final treatment.
