Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Hair Removal
Humans are mammals, so it’s natural to have hair all over your body. Still, the only place you want luscious locks is on your head. If you’re tired of removing unwanted hair with conventional shaving or painful waxing, it’s time to consider something more high-tech. Got questions about laser hair removal? We’ve got answers.
When is the best time of year to have laser hair removal?
This may surprise you, but winter is the best time for laser hair removal. This gives you plenty of time to complete the multiple sessions needed to remove all your unwanted hair. By the time bathing suit season arrives in the spring, you’ll be ready to sport your hair-free self!
How does laser hair removal work?
Not all hair removal lasers are the same. At Swinyer-Woseth Dermatology, we use advanced Spectrum and LightSheer diode lasers to remove hair faster, more comfortably, and with greater reliability than other methods.
When a laser is aimed at unwanted hair, heat travels down the shaft and damages the follicle that produces the hair. This treatment doesn’t damage your skin because the laser targets the melanin, or pigment, in the hair root. In fact, it’s best to come to your appointment with freshly shaved skin to reduce the risk of burning or irritation.
How many treatments do I need?
Plan to schedule at least three laser hair removal sessions per treatment area. Office visits may range from monthly to every four months, depending on the thickness and location of the hair. Every subsequent session leads to thinner, finer hair growth until, eventually, the treatment area is almost completely hairless. For your convenience, we sell laser hair removal treatments in packages of five.
Does treatment remove hair permanently?
Expect up to 90% hair reduction for at least three to six months after your final treatment. Any hair that grows back should respond well to future treatment and go even longer before growing back next time.
What parts of my body can be treated?
You can remove unwanted hair growth from virtually anywhere on your body! Commonly treated areas include:
- Legs
- Underarms
- Bikini line
- Back
- Chest
- Face
- Arms
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Stop plucking, waxing, tanning, or using self-tanners for six weeks leading up to your visit. Then, shave the day before or the morning of your visit. Also, avoid applying lotion, deodorant, makeup, or other products to the treatment area.
Does laser hair removal require recovery time?
Most people can resume their normal activities right away. Side effects are minor, if they occur at all, and may include redness, inflammation, and minor blistering. We recommend applying lotion, cream, or ointment and following other after-care tips until the area heals.
